Capsicum [Digestive, Circulatory] is added to many herbal formulas as a catalyst for the other herbs. It also stimulates digestion and enhances blood flow. It became NSP’s first product back in 1972 after Gene Hughes took it by the spoonful to help his stomach.

This blend contains apple pectin, a soluble fiber that has adsorbing and bulking properties; slippery elm bark, which forms a gel when mixed with water and helps things slide along smoothly; chamomile flowers; short-chain FOS—a soluble fiber that provides food for friendly microorganisms in the colon; flax meal—provides soluble fiber and supports colon health; marshmallow root, which is soothing and adds fiber.

Pau D’Arco [Immune] bark comes from a tree that grows primarily in Argentina and Brazil. The tree is known as taheebo. Unlike other trees in its midst, pau d’arco does not develop fungus growth. It contains a chemical called lapachol, which may account for the herb’s traditional use in strengthening and supporting the immune system. Pau d’arco also has been used traditionally to maintain a healthy circulatory system.

Nature’s Sunshine’s pau d’arco comes from Brazil. It is available in a variety of forms, including capsules, bulk for tea, liquid extract and soothing lotion. Each capsule contains 500 mg pau d’arco.

Take 2 capsules with a meal three times daily. Five capsules are equivalent to two cups of Taheebo tea.
 
Liquid: Take 1/2 teaspoon with water three times daily.
 
Bulk: Add 1 heaping tablespoon to 2 pints boiling water and remove from heat. Steep for 20 minutes and strain. Makes 4 cups.

Adults: Mix 2 teaspoons in a glass of water or juice.

Slippery Elm [Digestive, Intestinal] is also known by the names Red Elm, Moose Elm and Indian Elm. It may help to relieve occasional digestive discomfort and provides mucilage, which may soothe the throat and digestive tract.
 
Mucilage is an easily digestible long chain of sugars (polysaccharides) that make a slippery substance when combined with water. Historically, early American settlers used slippery elm as a survival food; George Washington and his troops survived for several days on slippery elm gruel during the bitter winter at Valley Forge.
 
 It may also be used externally as a poultice for the skin. Each capsule contains 360 mg slippery elm bark.

Adults: Take 2 capsules with a meal twice daily.
Bulk: Mix 1 or 2 heaping teaspoon(s) in 8 oz. of pure water or juice.
