It started with one potent plant and a simple idea. In 1972, Gene Hughes was taking cayenne pepper by the spoonful. His wife, Kristine, found a better way: Put the herbs in capsules. Simple today. Revolutionary then. That same curiosity still drives us—exploring what nature makes possible and how science and expertise can make it even better, in pursuit of brighter, healthier lives.
1972
The Hughes family pioneers herbal encapsulation, beginning with capsicum—better known as cayenne pepper.
1974
Our Quality Assurance Department officially opens, establishing purity and potency as cornerstones of everything we produce.
1978
Nature’s Sunshine launches “NATR” on the NASDAQ stock exchange, where it continues to trade today.
1979–1981
Distribution expands internationally, beginning in the South Pacific. Today, Nature’s Sunshine products are available in more than 40 countries.
1985
Our in-house manufacturing facility triples in size to support increasing demand and an expanding portfolio of products.
2015
The Hughes Center for Research and Innovation opens, bringing advanced research, clinical work and product-development laboratories together under one roof.
2023–2024
Our manufacturing facility becomes 100% solar-powered and earns TRUE Zero Waste Gold certification—advancing our commitment to people and the planet.
