It started with one potent plant and a simple idea.

In 1972, Gene Hughes was taking cayenne pepper by the spoonful. His wife, Kristine, found a better way: put the herbs in capsules. Simple today. Revolutionary then.

That moment sparked something bigger than either could have imagined. What began with a desire to make herbal wellness more accessible grew into a global company committed to quality, discovery and the power of nature.

More than 50 years later, that same curiosity continues to drive us. Here are some of the defining moments along the way.

The Nature's Sunshine story begins with Gene Hughes, cayenne pepper and a simple idea from his wife, Kristine. Gene had been taking cayenne by the spoonful. Kristine suggested putting herbs into capsules instead—a more convenient way to make them part of everyday life. That small innovation helped launch a company built on the belief that nature has extraordinary potential.

    Quality from the Beginning

As Nature's Sunshine grew, so did its commitment to doing things the right way. The company officially established its Quality Assurance Department, making purity and potency foundational priorities. That early investment helped shape a lasting commitment to quality across sourcing, manufacturing and finished products.

    Nature's Sunshine Goes Public

Just six years after its beginnings, Nature's Sunshine reached another major milestone: becoming a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol NATR. The achievement marked a new chapter of growth while keeping the company's herbal roots at the heart of its mission.
